This 47-story mixed-use tower at 66 West 38th Street on the southeast corner at Sixth Avenue was erected in 2001 by the Gotham Organization and M & J Trimming.

It is known as Atlas New York. 

It contains 374 rental apartments on floors 5 through 47, 46,000 square feet of office space on floors 2 through 4 that has its own address, 1010 Avenue of the Americas, and 16,000 square feet of retail space on the ground, second and basement levels in a separate condominium.

Schuman Lichtenstein Claman & Efron was the architect and Stephen Alton was the interior designer of the common interior spaces.

The building replaced two empty lots and two mid-rise commercial buildings and it used air rights from over five other buildings. M&J owned the two lots on the Avenue of the Americas where it had a button annex and a home decor store that were destroyed in a fire in 1997. Its main store was unharmed at 1008 Avenue of the Americas.

Bottom Line

It is close to Bryant Park, the Garment Center and Herald Square and its apartments have windowed kitchens and some windowed baths.

Description

The building has a small plaza on Sixth Avenue and its west façade has three setbacks.

It has a revolving door entrance and Amanda Weil designed the handsome and dramatic photographic murals in the lobby.
